New Shearers List!

If the temperatures we have been seeing this late spring are any indication, we have a long and hot summer to look forward to. Not exactly my favorite type of weather, and I think my llamas agree with me.

Already I've been fielding questions from folks wanting to get their llamas sheared and I have found I don't have a lot of names. So here is a great offer. CAL-ILA will post the name and contact information for shearers right here on the website for FREE! Yep free! Consider it a community service, because the members of CAL-ILA are concerned with keeping our llamas healthy and happy!

Llamas on PBS!

Sherry Halligan recently took a group into the Mt. Jefferson wilderness with a group of llama hikers. Watch this video and you'll be planning your spring trip! You have all winter to gather all your gear (hey, packs make great Christmas gifts!) and get in shape.

2013 Events!

We hope you are excited about the events planned for this year.  Here are some of the highlights;
 
Ranch Tours, Hikes, Clinics and Parades. And we are still looking for volunteers to host ranch tours, lead hikes and participate in clinics and parades.  Just let a Board member know how you want to get involved.

So get on-board and help us plan for 2013.  We need your ideas, comments and help to keep CAL-ILA alive and contributing to the llama community.

Looking for a few good Superintendents!

Sometimes when it rains it pours. And that aptly describes where we are with our show superintendents retiring!

Dixon May Fair, Grass Valley, State Fair and Hot August Nights are all in need of new show superintendents. Most have been producing great shows for many years and they are all ready to move on to other adventures.

So here is the dilemma, without Show Superintendents, there will be no llama shows. A superintendent coordinates with the hosting venue, the CAL-ILA board, exhibitors, volunteers, ALSA and the ILR. It's a great opportunity to develop ties in the camelid and agricultural communities which we are all part of. It's also a way to give back to the community that has given each of us, and our llamas, so much.

So how can YOU become a Show Superintendent. That's easy! Just contact any Board Member or the current show superintendent of your favorite show. We will let you know what is required and help you get started. Most of our shows have a written set of guidelines to help you pull-off a great show. And the current superintendents will be available to help you along the way.

So come on, jump into the ring! And we will see you at the show!

**Note: The Solano County Fair Show provides their own superintendent (whew!), but we always need volunteers to help produce the show.


California State Fair

July 25 - July 28 Sacramento, CA

26th running of the llama show at the State Fair. New class schedule this year offers more fun for less money!

Volunteers needed. Come help out for a day and get free passes and parking for the fair!

Solano County Fair

The Solano County Fair is hosting a one-day performance only llama show this year,

Saturday August 3rd.

The show is very flexible this year. You can come in Friday afternoon and stay overnight OR....

You can drive in Saturday morning (7-9am), show in the ring and drive home Saturday night!

President's Message

The CAL-ILA Board wishes you a HAPPY NEW YEAR. We hope to see you at events throughout the year. We look forward to welcoming new CAL-ILA members and the return of current and past members. 

Now that the holidays are over, it is time to focus on the New Year. Many of us reflect on the events of the past 12 months and start making resolutions for 2013. Here’s a resolution we hope you make; renew your CAL-ILA membership.

We have listened to the llama community regarding the cost of belonging to several organizations, so we’ve lowered the annual dues from $40 to $25. Click here now to renew your membership or join. Without members we cannot continue to grow and prosper. We may not even be able to continue operating.  We need your support.

CAL-ILA does not just sponsor shows. We host clinics about health maintenance, fiber uses, guard protection and packing. We support the Camelid Medicine Club and research at U.C. Davis. We sponsor parades, fun days, several spectacular llama hikes and other fun activities. CAL-ILA’s mission is to educate the general public about the joys of owning llamas. Along with these other activities, sponsoring llama shows is one way we fulfill that mission. CAL-ILA sponsors four major ALSA llama shows: Grass Valley, Dixon May Fair, California State Fair, and Hot August Nights Performance. For the first time ever we are partnering with LANA to co-host the Grass Valley Show, by doing this we feel we can reach a broader audience and provide more perks for the exhibitors. We are struggling to hold on the Solano County Fair, but we feel it is important to have a llama presence there.  CAL-ILA will also be sponsoring the Sub-Junior classes at the HOBO show in February with placing ribbons.

We are the one of the few llama organizations in California which still hosts an annual meeting featuring prominent experts in llama medicine. This year the annual event will again be held at the Dixon Fairgrounds in Dixon on Saturday March 9, 2013 from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Admission is just $10 per adult, discounts for youth. Lunch is included in the price of admission. Stonehenge Llamas will be catering a Mexican buffet and the CAL-ILA Board will provide everything else for your eating enjoyment (drinks and desert). Please donate items for the fund-raising raffles. The Board will create special baskets for a separate raffle. Nancy Martin, DVM will share with you her use of acupuncture techniques.  Other speakers and the full agenda will be announced soon.

Elections for CAL-ILA Directors and Officers will take place at the annual meeting.  Most of us on the Board have been in these positions for some time and we are looking for members who would be willing to run for open positions and bring some new ideas to CAL-ILA.  We have Board meetings via phone approximately five times and one face-to-face meeting each year. Step up and help guide the future of CAL-ILA.

The bottom line is; we need you.

Please make a resolution to support CAL-ILA for 2013.  Volunteers like you truly make a difference.
