My First Llama Show
(Grass Valley 2001)
by: Meagan Browne age 9

When I stepped into the show ring I could feel myself shaking and my knees knocking, I was embarrassed and afraid. But in some way I was actually having fun. I waited while the other kids showed their llamas until it was my turn.

The judge called me up and put her hand on Lexi's back. I forgot to brush down Lexi's wool afterwards. I forgot to move to some of the places when the judge went to different sides. Then the judge asked me to show Lexi's teeth. I tried but Lexi just wouldn't let me. Then I was to supposed to change pace but Lexi would only walk. I felt embarrassed because Lexi wouldn't run. I wish I had taught her a signal to run before the show. It was very hard to get Lexi straight but I did the best I could. I did stand really well though. I made sure my feet were just right and I held the lead just right.

I looked at the crowd and saw Mom and Dad. Linda (Solomon) was with them. I did wish that Linda could be in there showing with me but she couldn't be in there with me. Earlier Lexi won Grand Champion Heavy Wool Female. But this was different. They weren't judging the llama. T hey were judging me.

The next day I did Youth PR and Youth Obstacle Course with Desi. Linda said I did very very well in my back up and my side walk was great. I forgot to go into the petting! How could I forget that? I won eighth place in Youth PR and got a Sixth Place ribbon in Youth Obstacle. This was my very first time showing llamas. I was proud in all three shows.

Chris Jennings awarded me with a Gold Metal for Good Sportsmanship because she said I was such a good sport in my very first llama shows. She also said she saw me playing with the other kids and pretending to show the llamas after the show. I had some kids pretending they were the judges while I showed my llamas. She also told me she was so proud of me because I was out there helping clean the stalls. Linda Solomon trained me a lot and that is why I did so well.

I really liked all my days at the show but even liked more bringing the llamas home. All my friends got to come see the llamas.

I'm enjoying building an Obstacle course at home by my hideout. I love working with the llamas and I even trained Lexi to let us pet her back legs and her tail.

My friends and I like to play hide and go seek with Desi and Lexi. We are out of the game if the llamas look at us or sniff us. The last kid that hasn't been found wins the game. It's a hard game to win because it's hard to outsmart a llama! I love llamas.

THE END!
